The Challenge
A schedule I Canadian bank was looking to standardize Alteryx knowledge throughout the team to eliminate single points of failure. Our client was looking for documentation of standardization and enable cohesive migration of Alteryx Designer desktop workflows to Alteryx Server. This goes in-hand with best practices.
The Solution
Using a low-code, no-code solution in Alteryx, we helped to record workflows according to our documentation standards. The process provided metadata information for the purpose of the workflow, input and output data sources and a colour scheme to quickly understand key components of the workflow at a high-level. Furthermore, we modified their workflows to be compatible with Alteryx Server and helped establish best practices with administration.

Our Client's Context
The small schedule I bank in Canada was facing siloed knowledge and entire processes relying on single individuals. Their processes we’re working well for now, but had single points of failure and knowledge was in people’s heads and not in documentation. A more sustainable approach needed to be developed to eliminate single points of failure and share knowledge across the team. Reducing the bottlenecks ensures that the company can continue to build more robust processes leading to happy customers and continued growth in the future.
Our client’s knowledge was not up to par with innovative industry standards, working with siloed knowledge that had whole processes relying on single individual. The process was functional but not optimal as it wasn’t documented firmly. Reducing the bottlenecks ensures that the company can continue to build more robust processes leading to happy customers and continued growth towards success. Rectifying the process to required a more sustainable approach such as standardized documentation to foster collaboration. The client devised that the project should be managed on Alteryx Server, a software they required assistance to implement.
To improve the sharing of knowledge and reducing single-sources of failure, the organization decided that a new ways of working needed to be implemented to standardize the design of workflows and remove single-sources of failure. A standard documentation procedure needed to be implemented and multiple users needed to be able to collaborate on shared workflows and each person needed to understand. The business decided that Alteryx Server was the solution to their problems, but they needed help in setting up Alteryx server, migrating Alteryx Designer workflows to server and setting the new ways of working.
Taking an Audit of Challenges
Siloed Knowledge
Generating standardized documentation meant that anyone on the team could run the workflow. Eliminating reliance on a single individual, saving time and increasing productivity for both parties.
Migration to Alteryx Server
Our client was well versed in Alteryx Designer Desktop, using it develop their processes. To enable collaboration, those processes had to be migrated to Alteryx Server, where version history and standardization of workflows were accessible.
New Ways of Working
The migration process to the new server solved workflow centralization issue. However, new problems would arise if not delt with accordingly. Server governance, knowledge of differences between workflows, and standardization documentation still had to be implemented across the team.
Making Deposits for Long-Term Success
To address these challenges, Compass provided three core services: Alteryx Server setup, workflow documentation best practices, and workflow migration to Alteryx Server.
For Alteryx Server setup, Compass collaborated with internal IT teams to provision the appropriate virtual machine specifications, set up credentials for additional tools such as SharePoint, and establish districts and collections to separate different business units. The team also conducted hands-on sessions with business users to configure their personal Data Connection Manager (DCM) connections, ensuring seamless access to critical data sources.
To improve workflow documentation, Compass led interactive workshops demonstrating best practices for structuring and annotating workflows. Key focus areas included metadata management and a standardized color-coding scheme to facilitate cross-functional knowledge transfer. At the same time, the team documented existing workflows to improve readability and establish a reference standard for future development.
Finally, Compass assessed and migrated key workflows from Alteryx Designer Desktop to Alteryx Server. During the migration, the team integrated additional tools such as SharePoint input/output tools, the Salesforce Input tool, and external APIs like Workday to enhance functionality and scalability.

Setting the Seeds for Compounding Returns
The implementation of Alteryx Server and the migration of Designer workflows enabled the bank to centralize critical processes, eliminating single points of failure and introducing structured documentation to improve knowledge sharing across teams. With a more robust and scalable approach, the organization established a foundation for greater efficiency and long-term sustainability.
Centralized Workflow Management
With Alteryx Server in place, all workflows are now centrally managed within a single platform, significantly improving governance and operational continuity. Previously, critical processes relied on individual users managing workflows in Designer, creating bottlenecks and risks of disruption. Now, with Alteryx Server, workflows run uninterrupted, ensuring business continuity. Key features—including collections, Data Connection Manager, and automated job scheduling—were leveraged to structure assets logically and automate routine tasks. The result: increased efficiency, minimized downtime, and improved business processes that directly enhance customer satisfaction.
Seamless Workflow Migration
To facilitate a smooth transition, select Designer workflows were migrated to Alteryx Server as prototypes. Many of these workflows contained Designer-specific components that required adjustments to ensure compatibility with the server environment. The Compass team modified these workflows, integrating external APIs such as Workday and converting inputs and outputs to leverage SharePoint tools. These enhancements ensured that workflows could run seamlessly on the server, enabling any authorized user to execute them without reliance on a single individual.
Establishing a Standardized Documentation Process
To enhance collaboration and preserve institutional knowledge, the organization adopted a new documentation standard for workflows. This framework ensures that all workflows follow a consistent structure, including a standardized progression of steps and a uniform color-coding scheme. While adapting to the new standards required some initial adjustments, the long-term benefits were clear—faster knowledge transfer, improved workflow comprehension, and a more resilient analytics environment for years to come.
