Alteryx Server
Alteryx Designer
To help the client with the pain points using Alteryx Designer and Server, the Compass team provided hands on governance training sessions on best practices for maintaining server as well as a documentation standard for how workflows should be created such as including metadata information and color scheme. The Compass team took the most critical workflows and adapted them to match the documentation standard to help the airline with the full documentation and migration process.
An International Star Alliance Member is a well-versed and experienced user of Alteryx Designer and Alteryx Server, but the client has been having trouble maintaining critical business processes and losing critical workflow knowledge when experienced team members are leaving the organization. The client was looking for help with better ways to share knowledge between team members, ensure critical business logic is maintained even if team members leave the organization and best practices for Alteryx Server Governance
Our client is an experienced airline company which uses Alteryx to perform key business processes to help solve common issues in the airline industry. They heavily use Alteryx across many different business units with all workflow processing centralized on a large Alteryx Server. Our client has significant expertise in building workflow logic, but has had to completely rebuild some workflows due to people leaving the organization and not having enough documentation or readability within the workflow. They wanted to revamp their documentation process and standardize this process across business units on their upgraded version of Alteryx server.
In addition, the client was having difficulty with governance of server as well as understanding server settings leading to inefficiencies and a growing challenge to administer server. They were looking for best practices on how to maintain their server effectively and provide recommendations on server settings.
Solving these issues would help the business with sharing business logic within the team and govern server better leading to more efficient workflows and improved decision making off of the data.
Our client wanted to be able to easily share Alteryx workflow knowledge between individuals. Workflow knowledge was getting tied to specific individuals and was lost when these employees left the company leading to wasted time from rework.
The client was looking for a framework to effectively govern Alteryx Server and gain insights into configuration settings. Improvements in these areas would help the client would allow for more robust workflows leading to reduced inefficiencies.
A growing issue was maintainability of workflows over time. With dozens of licenses and many workflows being developed by each user a change in the approach to documentation and knowledge sharing is needed to ensure the business runs smoothly.
To help the client solve their issues with Alteryx Server governance, configuration and documentation best practices, the Compass Analytics team provided two main services: Alteryx training sessions and Alteryx Workflow documentation and migration.
In the Alteryx training sessions, the Compass team presented our framework for Alteryx Server governance and provided governance documents to manage internal change management processes for promoting Alteryx workflows on their development server to their production server. In addition, we held additional training sessions demonstrating the key components to our Alteryx workflow documentation standards, provided documentation templates to users and a guide on effectively structuring major elements of workflows. These sessions are helping to lay the groundwork for changing the work culture to maintain workflows moving forward
For the Alteryx workflow documentation, we took a number of critical business workflows and documented them according to the Compass documentation standard. We reorganized workflows to provide a clearer flow of transformations and added context on key components of workflows. Before migrating all documented workflows to the production environment for Alteryx Server we sat down with each owner to walk through the workflow promotion process, which includes ensuring adherence to documentation standards among many other checks, to promote workflows to the production environment.
The Alteryx Server training and Workflow documentation has allowed the star alliance airline to improve knowledge sharing across their teams, implement an improved governance framework and start the process of applying the documentation standard across their organization. These changes will allow the airline to improve efficiency by reducing rework and ensuring critical business processes can run smoothly
The Compass team provided hands-on training for documentation best practices to ensure the team had proficiency in implementing the key components. The team helped to document a number of critical workflows to provide the start for the documentation standard to take hold in the organization. The improved documentation practice will lead to improved knowledge sharing across the team and more sustainable business practices moving forward.
The Alteryx Server governance trainings helped the airline set a new pathway forward for effective management of their workflows on server. Documents covering the framework for governing server and implementing the workflow promotion process were provided. The improvements in server administration will lead to improved efficiencies and increased robustness of workflow processes moving forward.
The Compass team helped introduce a new documentation standard and helped provide the initial steps in the change management process to change the approach to workflow documentation within the team. The training sessions, best practices guide and initial documentation of workflows provides the start of improved workflow documentation and knowledge sharing across teams leading to increased efficiency due to reduced rework of business processes.
